Rurakshaa Yogashala

BASIC INVERSIONS

At Rudrakshaa Yogashala, inversions are not performed for spectacle or acrobatics. Instead, inversions are experienced as sādhana: an intentional, sacred practice that literally and symbolically flips the way you see the world, stimulates your internal awareness, and helps cultivate unwavering steadiness. Inversions are also grounded in the yogic concept of Viparīta Karani Kriyā, the conscious reversal of prānic flow. This class helps you gently change your physical and energetic orientation so you are looking inward and bringing your heart overhead.

As Basic Inversions is scheduled to be offered towards the end of the weekly practice cycle, it is a culmination of all that has been opened: hips grounded, shoulders soft, spine lengthened, and breath refined. When these foundational features are established, the body is ready to embark on a safer exploration of ūrdhva gati (subtle upward flow of energy) as well as the clarity that is a natural consequence of inverted posturing.

This class will provide foundational and accessible inversion postures with wall support, where inversions are done slowly and methodically. For example, Viparīta Karani (legs-up-the-wall), Ardha Sarvāṅgāsana (half shoulderstand), and pre-cursors to Sirsasana (headstand) or Adho Mukha Vrksasana (handstand) are accessible in a supported way. Importance is placed on breath, bandhas (internal locks), and drishti (gaze) while developing internal stability and alignment.

The Sādhana of Reversing Perspective

In yogic philosophy, the top of the head is the entry point to Sahasrāra Chakra — the center of pure consciousness. By gently inverting, we symbolically bow to the inner light and surrender the mind to stillness. In this space, effort becomes grace, movement allows still listening.

Whether you are new to inversions, or returning to them with new awareness, this class is an anchored, respectful introduction without a rush to “achieve,” only a steady invitation to build confidence, courage, and curiosity from the inside out.

Join us in Basic Inversions to discover the power of softness, wisdom of slowing down, and subtle transformation from turning the world — and your awareness — upside down.
